My name is Maya and I live in California with my husband Mark and two sons, "the Menininho" and "Baby J." J was born in Dec. 2010 and is our first BLW baby. He was exclusively breastfed till 7 months of age when we started solids (asparagus). Baby J has Marfan syndrome and some motor delays that can go along with that diagnosis, so we're being cautious about introducing solid food as he is still working on sitting independently for long periods of time. So far, he's quite enthusiastic about the foods he has tasted though!

Vietnamese Pho

My husband is a big fan of Vietnamese Pho. A couple months ago (I’m behind in writing posts!) we tried out a little family-run restaurant within walking distance from our apartment. The boys loved it! Pho, for those who don’t know, is a rice noodle soup with bits of beef, then you add basil, jalapenos,…

BLW & Constipation?

P1110339

I’m wondering how you other mamas deal with your babies’ constipation, or if they even have any. At 9.5 months, Baby J is swallowing more and more solid food. I try to offer him a variety of foods although he, like his older brother, has a preference for bready foods (cereal, rice bread). I’m having…

Fried Aipim

This past week my mother was in town visiting. She doesn’t come out this way often, so we always make the hour drive to a small, popular Brasilian cafe when she’s here. With no high chair, we had to feed Baby J on our laps. He had a sampling of each of our plates, but…

Baked Pears These were a big hit with both Baby J and his older brother! Quick and easy to make, too. Ingredients Pear Butter (1 tbs is PLENTY) Cinnamon to taste   Method 1) Wash/peel pear 2) Cut in half height-wise and scoop out seeds. 3) Melt some butter, then baste pear completely 4) Top…

Recipe: Feijoada

Maya’s Feijoada My mother was born in Brasil and we were raised eating a Brasilian dish called feijoada. At it’s simplest, it’s a meat and bean stew. It seems every family in Brasil has their own spin on it though and the feijoada can be as complex as you want to make it. My feijoada…

Quinoa With Beets

This is a picture from a month or so ago, shortly after we started BLW with Baby J. You’ll notice he’s sitting in a bumbo chair…this was taken before he could sit up unassisted. As I mentioned in our introduction post, because J had all the other readiness signs we started BLW once he could…

Applesauce and Rice Cake

P1100886

One afternoon while M was napping, I decided to let Baby J have at it with a bowl of applesauce. I’m not sure he got a whole lot in his mouth, but he enjoyed playing with it! About halfway through I got the idea to break apart a rice cake and give him the pieces….
