I’m wondering how you other mamas deal with your babies’ constipation, or if they even have any. At 9.5 months, Baby J is swallowing more and more solid food. I try to offer him a variety of foods although he, like his older brother, has a preference for bready foods (cereal, rice bread).
I’m having a difficult time getting J to eat any veggies. He’ll do some corn if it’s mixed in with other foods, but that’s about it. However, he’s so constipated that his pediatrician prescribed suppositories for him. This is what we’ve tried previous to that:
1) Removing solids for 3 days and just breastfeeding
2) Guava juice (1 oz at a time); J can’t have thin juices like apple or prune because he penetrates when he drinks
3) 1-2 prunes a day (he eats only about 1/2 though)
4) Offering veggies
Do you have other suggestions? Anyone else dealing with this? J does happily self-feed naturally pureed foods (applesauce, yogurt) that I pre-load on a spoon for him. One suggestion the pediatrician made was to puree the prunes or some veggies and have him feed himself that way. I realize this isn’t strict BLW but can’t think of any other ideas. Thanks!

Sebastian didn’t have many digestive issues but we did do prunes blended with applesauce. It was a big hit and DELICIOUS. And like instant poop, haha.
We used to do those puree squeeze pouches as well. I consider them BLW because Baby still feels themselves, just from a packet rather than a spoon. We also do pineapple and other juicy fruits as a finger food.
Sebastian was really into breads at first but now he really likes meat, fruits and potato the best.
Little man drinks water during every meal and if he
Is very active he gets a couple of sips. He has “big boy poop” at 8-months but no constipation.
We go back and forth between normal and constipated, but offer water and prunes mashed up with fruit with most meals (preloaded spoon or toast finger). If pasta and bread is a problem, just don’t offer it – only veg and fruit for a couple days. Although I’m surprised the EBF didn’t help.
Don’t offer the bready type stuff and definitely don’t feed any dairy. Meat might also be a problem?
I have my daughter on a basically vegan diet. She eats : beans, lentils, greens (cooked kale etc.), brown rice, whole grain pasta (not often), whole grain oatmeal with fruit, sweet potatoes, squash, avocados, raw fruit, etc. I make sauces for the pasta that have things like almond milk and pumpkin in them. I want to introduce her to more nuts so I can include them in sauces for protein and nutrients.
She gets lots of fiber because pretty much everything I feed her has fiber. She also still breastfeeds a lot. We’ve never had any constipation issues and she still poos like a baby. ;D So, I’d say ditch any meat, dairy and processed grains for awhile.
This is timely. My babe is 6 months and 2 weeks. We started BLW last week and now hasn’t pooped in 5 days. Plenty of stinky farts, though! I tried prune juice (1 tbsp from a cup) this evening, and no result yet. Tomorrow I may spoon feed him some prune puree even though its not strictly BLW. I’d be interested in more suggestions too!!
hi, i wasn’t sure where to post/ask this question regarding BLW stools & nutrient absorption. We’ve been doing BLW since 6.5mo & now at 9 months i’m still seeing the food “bits” in the stool and wondering about actual nutrient absorption if some foods are still looking in whole form (ex. Sauteed spinach not broken down much, prune pieces visible) my little S does not have any teeth yet at 9mo so i am guessing that will improve, still BFing on demand but curious if anyone has come across credible info…thanx, well organized blogg keep up the good work

Just wanted to update everyone. Turns out the Baby J was constipated because of an undiagnosed dairy allergy. We’re still having trouble with veggies and meat due to some oral aversions that developed from under-treated reflux (in part due to the wrong meds, and in part due to the dairy allergy).
Hope you get notified that you have a new comment… I’m really curious, because at 9 months, we’re going through this, how you found out about the dairy allergy?
We used to have yogurt for breakfast every day but I’ve eliminated it. Done a bunch of other things but still no success. I’m starting to think about calling the doc…
We completely eliminated dairy for 3 weeks. That means I had to eliminate it too, since it came through breastmilk. We check ingredients on everything because dairy can hide in some places. His dairy allergy does not show up in skin or blood tests…it’s more of an internal inflammation thing. Inflammation can be diagnosed via an endoscopy.
Good luck!
