Salami isn’t on the short list of foods I think babies (or anyone really) should be given. It’s processed and kind of salty, but dang it, it’s meat. And it’s delicious. So it’s not an everyday food but sure, Anneliese can have some.
I’ve also been asked if I think giving fruit “too early” to babies will make them only like sweet things. Clearly that’s not the case with my girl! I gave her cinnamon apples at the same time as the salami, and she switched back and forth between the two, enjoying the flavors of both.

I love watching her just chew, suck, taste the food.

This video is so great, because she switches back and forth between the apples and salami, clearly enjoying both.
My dog enjoyed this meal too, when Anneliese was finished.

She is getting better and better at this eating deal.
Cute! It’s proof that we learn to eat sweet after salty! Glad she enjoyed it! It’s fine to let her try salami … BiP loves it too!
I’ve decided there are no foods I won’t allow Sebastian to have. It’s just too hard! And foods like salami I LOVE, so why would I deny him that? I grew up healthy and no one in my family has weight problems. I think moderation is the most important thing to teach and as we all know, banning something is the quickest way to make a child obsessed with it!
I don’t get why people keep asking about babies preferring sweets just because they get fruit. Sweet and savory are totally different flavors that are never in competition as far as I’m concerned. And if it’s whole fruits in their natural form, what’s the harm if the baby does form a preference? I don’t think anyone actually gets fat just from eating whole fruits.
It makes me really happy that we give our babies food like bacon and salami.
When the Higglet quite definitely rejected her banana today by throwing it on the floor a few times I decided to go for the pork we had for dinner last night. I was going to wait 2 wks before venturing beyond fruit and veg. It was cooked in a lovely mustardy sauce – and it was a hit! Seems the child wanted meat!
She stuffed it in her mouth, sucked away and chewed at some bits. Having felt we were making slow progress, it’s been really encouraging.
