On Kynlee’s “half-birthday” (the day she turned 6 months old) we gave her food for the first time. That day we were having lunch at my parents’ house and two of the things my mom cooked were perfect for Kynlee’s first foods – mashed potatoes and butter beans! I mashed the “inside” of the butter beans out for her and she ate that but wasn’t real interested in the skin of the bean. She LOVED the mashed potatoes, though!
She started out using her hands…

…and then she used a spoon!

Kynlee ended up eating more mashed potatoes than butter beans which is what I expected. I mean she went to town on them! I was certainly suprised at how much of them she ate and that her initial reaction to food for the first time went so well.
Many people say that you should start your child out with just one food over the course of several days before adding a new one to the mix. That’s obviously not what we did and I feel okay about that. Afterall, BLW is all about the experi(ence) and experi(ment).
Overall we had a great start with BLW and we are looking forward to the rest of our journey!

We are doing BLW with our 10 month old and I love it. They eat at their own pace and gain independence learning how to self-feed. Looks like she did pretty good on her first go! You must be proud!
Yes, I am very proud!! Even more than that… I’m just excited for her! This is still very new to us, but it’s so easy and fun!
We haven’t been doing the “one food for seven days” thing either. We have no history of food allergies, so I’m really not concerned. Plus, they really do eat so little of it. It’s not a big deal.
What a fabulous start! BLW actually states that you shouldn’t wait days between each food. By 6 months most baby’s stomachs are mature enough to tolerate most foods (unless you have a family allergy). There is no reason to delay meat, eggs etc … Trusting your baby to lead the way is key and it looks like Kynlee had a ball!
[...] of Kynlee’s 6-month birthday, she tried buttermilk biscuits! Earlier in the day she had her first two foods. We weren’t really planning to do any more foods that day but after supper we had a biscuit [...]
Wow, how fun! I think it’s neat that both of us did “spoon” foods for our baby’s first solids… but that our babies FED THEMSELVES. I think the idea that purees are NOT baby-led weaning foods is mistaken… purees are great if they’re delicious and we adults would eat them (apple sauce, mashed potatoes, butternut squash, etc) AND if the baby feeds herself. No mommy/daddy shoveling it in.
Looks like she really enjoyed it. Have fun. I am excited to see her eating all the different foods.
