DeborahRuth just shared Capri’s first lemon, and her lack of lemon-face.
Well, Anneliese’s first lemon experience was today, and she definitely had lemon-face. But she absolutely loved the lemon. She went back to it several times, and sucked out a lot of the juice. I didn’t get much on video because she was in my lap, but what I did get is pretty priceless.
Anneliese also tried (raw) cauliflower for the first time today.

I didn’t expect her to eat any of it, and she didn’t, but she enjoyed sucking on it. She did the same thing with some raw broccoli (we were at a salad bar) and enjoyed it too.

Same deal with her first (raw) carrot stick. She didn’t nibble off any of it, but she did like the flavor and enjoyed playing with it. I’m definitely going to have to cook her some carrots and cauliflower so they’re softer, to see how she likes actually eating them.

We are really having fun with this baby-led solids thing. I think that’s really the only way to go about it – realize it’s for fun. For learning. For experimentation. For flavors and textures. Eventually it’ll be about nutrition, but that’s not the focus for another 5 months or so.

Cute! And tasty! Where did you get anneliese’s bib? I’ve been searching for a plastic, wipe-clean one just like that…and the pattern is adorable (though I have a boy!)
Her bib is from Target! I haven’t looked there lately for bibs, but they had several similar wipe-clean ones last year.
I have a friend who tried to do BLW and she was frustrated because she felt like her son wasn’t getting enough food, that he was always hungry. Do you find that has been a problem at all? I don’t have children so I don’t know anything about this but I find it so interesting!
Absolutely NOT a problem. As I said, nutrition isn’t the focus until they’re at least a year old. Until then, all of their nutritional needs are still met with breastmilk (or formula).
If Anneliese is hungry, I NURSE her, not give her a piece of food to play with. Right now, her food=breastmilk. Solids are just delicious toys at this point.
If the baby seems “always hungry” as in, wanting to nurse frequently, it’s likely just a growth spurt or similar developmental milestone, and totally normal. If you nurse on demand, your milk production will adjust to be exactly the amount your baby needs.
Love A’s lemon face! I am not a lemon fan myself, but Kynlee might be! I will have to try that with her soon.
That really is the problem, that most people try to fill up their babies with purees and cereal. I am much more interested in having something FUN to do to pass the time.
I’d love to try lemon but I’d be nervous about lemon juice in the eyes.
I haven’t given Judah a lemon yet- I just gave Lincoln and Wyatt alemon last week! They LOVED it. I could barely pry the rinds out of their little fingers. Now if they would repeat that with asparagus I’d be a happy Mama!
Seems like all the moms are breastfeeding moms. Will you guys feature parents that aren’t breastfeeding? That would be good for the minority of BLW parents that aren’t bfing.
If everyone is a breastfeeding mom, it was by coincidence! Once the blog is a little mature and some of the babies “graduate” from BLW, I will be seeking out specific types of parents to round things out a little more. Thanks to your suggestion, I’ll be looking for a formula-to-solids baby.
